As one the most world famous soccer matches fast approaches (El Clasico: Real Madrid v Barcelona), we would like to talk about perseverance.

Like in any sport, perseverance is crucial in order to master the necessary skills to perform at a higher level. Perseverance will not allow you to give up, to quit, to succumb to external pressures, to search for an easy exit, to look for excuses…

It is quite amazing how one of the most impressive soccer players in the world, Lionel Messi, not only has phenomenal skills but also seems to never give up and to be able to maintain his objective quite clear, even when is on the ground (mainly because he has been fouled by the opponent).

This calls to mind, what the author of the Letter to the Hebrews writes:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12, 1:2)

We are indeed in the race of life, and the way we run this will have an impact on our eternal salvation. However, as Messi has had excellent coaches that have provided him with good advice, we have Jesus “the leader and perfecter of faith” as our coach…Let’s persevere in this race of life by searching what is good without being daunted by besetting difficulties and discouragement.
